Meet Your Mentors:

Aaron Olson (@honkfestival)
Data Infrastructure at Shopify

What are you passionate about?
I’m passionate about how humans and computers interact with each other! I think that programming is a new form of literacy and I would like to help everyone learn to program.

Why did you get involved with Ladies Learning Code?
In part because programming and literacy, but mainly because I want to do what I can to help our industry become more inclusive and not dominated by white males.

Josh Gosse (@jlgosse)
Software Developer on Shopify’s iOS Admin app

What are you passionate about?
I’m passionate about getting more people involved in technology, and programming in particular, so we can continue to mature our industry.

Why did you get involved with Ladies Learning Code?
I’ll echo what Aaron said. Our industry is currently dominated by white males, so getting some fresh perspective from more women would be a huge step forward for young technology companies.

Lucas Harding (@lucasharding)
iOS and sometimes-Web Developer at Shopify

What are you passionate about?
I want to get more people interested in programming, even if it’s just a hobby for most people. Programming develops skills that are applicable to many different areas, and anyone can benefit.

Why did you want to get involved?
I met Nicole a while ago and was very impressed with the organization and past events, so I wanted to get involved.

Gabriel Castro (@gabrielcastro)

Lead Front-End Developer at Akamai

What are you passionate about?
I’m passionate about UX and human-computer interaction. I like building things to make people’s lives easier. I’m also an avid runner. Definitely one of those crazy people running around in the winter!

Why did you get involved with Ladies Learning Code?
Because I enjoy mentoring and I want to encourage as many people as possible to get into programming.

Mike Williamson (http://mikewilliamson.wordpress.com/)
Freelance Web Developer

What are you passionate about?
I love by the creative expression programming allows. I am passionate about expanding my skills and getting better at it. My other passion is the Brazilian art of Capoeira Angola which I teach here in Ottawa. I love the physical challenge of playing a beautiful game and the history and culture continue to fascinate me.

Why did you get involved with Ladies Learning Code?
Ladies Learning Code is tackling an important facet of the digital divide: tonnes of women use digital technologies and precious few of them are involved with making it. Who wouldn’t want to improve that situation?

Nick Small (@nciagra | http://github.com/nickjs)
Batman.js Developer at Shopify

What are you passionate about?
Building great awesome shit and great user experiences by whatever technical means possible; typing in boxes.

Why did you get involved with Ladies Learning Code?
I’m interested in exploring as many avenues as possible to bring code and technology into as many lives as possible.

I’m passionate about Ruby on Rails, UX, startups, entrepreneurship and innovation. I love seeing people’s creativity at work in general, and also expressing creativity through software.

Why did you get involved with Ladies Learning Code?
Because I thoroughly enjoy getting more people into Ruby, it’s a fantastic language; and I enjoy teaching. That, and I think what LLC is doing is fantastic. I’m happy to help.

Maher Manoubi (@mahermanoubi | http://mahermanoubi.com/)
Software Engineer at Adobe

What are you passionate about?
I’m passionate about technology, science and the human brain. I love penetrating deep down into complex systems. I’m also building a passion around hardware and robotics.

Because I would like to see more girls interested in coding and engineering.

Rob Fletcher (@terraflubb)
Red Giant, UI Programmer

What are you passionate about?
Getting people excited about programming and seeing software development as a hobby, a toy, or a tool. Writing video games is my favorite way to do that.

Why did you get involved with Ladies Learning Code?
It’s important to computer science, software development, and hacker culture to balance out its currently unfortunate gender ratio. Imagine how much more cool stuff we could see if we nearly doubled the participants involved?

Ben Doyle (@benjamin_doyle | https://github.com/BenDoyle)
Data Scientist at Shopify

What are you passionate about?
I love ideas. I love solving hard problems. I love building community and consensus

Why did you get involved with Ladies Learning Code?
I want my daughter and every other girl to have as much encouragement, support and opportunity in STEM as I had. LLC seems like a great place to help!

Kurtis Funai (@kurtfunai | http://kurtfunai.com/)

Spending time with my family, music, learning. Creating things to make people’s lives easier and more enjoyable.

I believe that programming is incredibly empowering. My friends can’t get me to stop talking about it. I can’t wait to teach people who are excited to learn.
