Join us at it’s OK* Studios in Toronto for a screening of the 2020 documentary Coded Bias, addressing race and gender AI bias.
The tech we use every day needs to actually work for us all. This event is available to anyone PWYC with a suggested donation of $10, light snacks included. This event is included as part of Career Collective membership. it's OK* Studios has a wheelchair-accessible entrance and washrooms on the first floor.
Facial recognition technology didn’t work on Joy Buolamwini until she put on a white mask.
Coded Bias (2020), directed by Shalini Kantayya, is a documentary film that explores the fallout of MIT Media Lab researcher Joy Buolamwini´s startling discovery that facial recognition does not see dark-skinned faces and women accurately, and her journey to push for the first-ever legislation in the U.S. to govern against bias in the algorithms that impact us all.
If we haven’t met yet, hi 👋 we’re a non-profit organization that connects tech skills to the tech-curious.
At Canada Learning Code, we believe that digital skills are tools of empowerment. The world is changing, and we want Canada to be ready. We’re here to make sure that all people in Canada have access to the knowledge they need to prosper in our digital world.
Our programs are designed in a way that seek to explicitly welcome those who have historically been and continue to be marginalized and underrepresented in tech, with a focus on cis women, trans women, trans men, non-binary people, and others who are marginalized because of their gender identity as well as Black, Indigenous and other Racialized people, people in low-income communities, and newcomers.
