Working with Mentors

This year, we will be working with Chapters, and HQ members who have volunteered to be Mentors for #glcCodeDay! The Mentors will be assigned a Code Mobile team to work with. They will be participating in Mentor Training with Cael and Wilson to feel confident in mentor responsibilities. After we introduce you via email, you can connect with them. Some of the Chapter Mentors may not have slack, so please communicate this to Yara and Kelsey if that is the case.

Meeting Your Mentors
You will be sent a communication shortly being e-introduced to your Mentors. If possible, arrange a time prior to June 20th to meet, get to know each other, and discuss anything relevant to the workshop. Keep in mind these are mostly volunteers we are working with, let’s be grateful they volunteered and support them in what they need to be successful for GLC Day. If you need support with this meeting or communication, feel free to chat with Cael. At this meeting, make sure Mentors have access to the ROS template that will have been updated with your event specific details or any other materials you’ve adapted outside of training for your workshop. They have been linked with their own training course with access to content and additional materials (like the training video!).

Mentors Joining a KLC Experience
Mentors have been extended a chance to jump into a CodeMo virtual KLC workshop prior to GLC Day. This is optional for Chapter Mentors, as the majority of our workshops take place during traditional working hours. CSM’s will confirm which Chapter mentors will be joining specific events in the future, if they are able to do so and will open up Mentor tickets for them (there has definitely been interest!)

Mentor Huddle
For those of you who have attended, or facilitated a Chapter experience or Signature Event before: you will have run or participated in a Mentor Huddle. The main objective is to appreciate the Mentors, make them feel confident, and give them an opportunity to ask questions. The Mentor Huddle can include all 4 roles for virtual workshops and in addition the Chapter Mentors. The Mentor Huddle will take place at least 30 minutes before the experience starts, and cane be 5 – 10 minutes of your setup time before the experience.

Things to cover in the Mentor Huddle:
Keep in mind, if you are meeting with your Chapter or HQ Mentors prior to the event, you may have already covered some of these topics (you might need to review them).

  • Introductions (2-3 minutes)
  • Experience Overview (3-5 minutes)
  • Schedule of the day
  • Role of team members
  • Any last minute content or tool tips
  • Any information about sponsors, or special guests
  • Confirming or Adding Mentor Responsibilities
  • Confirming any additional roles for the Mentor. Example, In the party room: they might volunteer to lead an icebreaker, or later on in the workshop lead a movement break. In main room: they may help Co-Instructor monitor the chat, and in breakout rooms the will interact with learners, answer questions, support learners that are struggling.
