Getting Started with DSE 2.0

Here are some considerations for delivering any of the Modules from DSE 2.0:

  • Room Setup
A “U” shape works well for discussion. You can also have learners set up in groups of 4 – 6 per table.
If possible, make sure you have access to chart paper, a white board, or chalk board. This way you can write down questions for later, or keep the wifi information visible at all times.
  • Laptop Setup
Disable Scratch or any other automatic pop up screen(s) on laptops, if possible. This can include clearing the Downloads and Documents folders, as well as clearing the Desktop before a workshop.
  • Printing Off Content Slide Decks
For Learners: For the 1st workshop please print enough slide decks for each learner. You can follow the directions below but print 1 slide without notes. After the 1st workshop, ask which learners would like printed resources for the next workshop and expense accordingly.
For Instructors: Notes for content are included in the slides! Printing instructions: Select File → Select Print Settings and Preview → A new window will open, Select “1 slide without notes” and change to “1 slide with notes” → Select print icon in this preview mode, a new window will open, Select “More Settings” → Change “Pages per sheet” to 4 to 6 slides a page → Make sure under “More Settings” that “Two sided” is unchecked. Expense accordingly.
  • Playing Music
Before a workshop starts, play some light hearted music as folks enter the space. Spotify has great acoustic playlists available online for free.
  • Getting to Know Your Cohort
Please purchase name tags for the first workshop with the group! We suggest using card stock so that they can be re-used workshop to workshop. Please bring markers to your workshop.
  • Icebreakers
We want learners to get to know each other! An icebreaker does need to tie back to the content. An example: “Please say your name, and one thing you are hoping to learn from this workshop.” At the end of the workshop follow up. Icebreakers should be done every time there is a new member. To avoid asking the same question each module, you can update your question to reflect the topics in the content. Example for Module 2: Ask the group what was their best or worst customer experience?
  • MOU Requirements and Author Explanations
We signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOUs) with our content creators. Please read the short bios in the content!
  • When in Doubt, Group it Out
DSE has an extensively collaborative content setup. If learners don’t want to share with the group, have them share with an elbow partner.
  • Surveys
Are always optional. Be prepared to instruct learners on how to fill out a survey.
  • Preparing for Contingency
Contingency is what to do when you do not have access to internet. The DSE 2.0 content is not intended to be run offline. Do not book offline experiences. If you do not have internet access, the Optional Pre-Module and Module 4 are the only Modules you can successfully deliver offline. In these examples, there are still some exercises that would require a different style of facilitation and some quick thinking! There is guidance for each module on contingency plans. Have one printed copy of each workshop, and a pdf version of the slides saved to a USB. Another option is to save the slide decks to make sure they are ‘Available Offline’ in Google Drive. Watch a video here on how to setup Google Drive for offline access and refer to Module 1, Workshop 1, Slides 28 – 30. Generally, contingency method includes: walking through the screenshots, building more discussion, or paper prototyping instead of doing activities online. Have access to chart paper and markers in case of contingency.
  • Training Resources
Third party resources can be used by our internal team, they are not needed for the content. Translation of English only resources are available 4 to 6 weeks after receiving a written request.
